What Are Digital Dentures?
Dentures are a great solution for tooth loss. While traditional dentures are still a great option, advances in dental technology have created a new solution using Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM). In keeping with modern, minimally invasive dental methods, the Wolter Advanced Dental Care team has added Digital Dentures to its toolbox.
The term “digital” in digital dentures describes how the dentures are designed and made. This new system for creating removable dentures provides dentures with a better fit, better comfort, and a more comprehensive range of solutions for each patient.
How Are Digital Dentures Made?
The procedure for digital dentures is much like that of our Single-Visit Crown (CEREC) process.
Using a specially designed oral 3D scanner, Dr. Wolter or a specialized operator will accurately capture the 3D impression of your mouth & teeth. This will record how your existing teeth or dentures fit and even how your bite is shaped.
The impression is recorded with laser imaging which is both safe and precise. The imaging takes 3-5 minutes, after which the CAD/CAM software will show you and Dr. Wolter the digital copy of your teeth, which will be used to make your new dentures.
The data collected from the scan is transferred to the design software. Then, the software helps to create digital dentures by conceptualizing the perfect shape of your mouth and/or tooth based on the scanned data and information from the scan. Dr. Wolter can then fine-tune the try-in dentures for occlusion and tooth positions and reline them with traditional impression material.
If there are any changes needed, Dr. Wolter can scan them and merge all the scans together to create a more precise measurement of your teeth, mouth, and bite. The final scans are sent out to a lab to create your new digital dentures.
Benefits of Digital Dentures
Precise Fit
Modern CAD/CAM technology allows the Wolter ADC team to create dentures with accurate spacing and bite. The technology ensures your dentures will be better-fitting and not become loose or fall out like traditional dentures more often will.
Durable
Traditional dentures are made in separate steps and involve multiple parts. Unlike their older counterparts, digital dentures are made of high-density acrylic material that is processed under high pressure and temperature for strength that has been tested to withstand even the strongest of forces created by your jaw. Additionally, the digital dentures are created from a single piece of acrylic, so there is no need for bonding pieces together that may become loose over time. Strength and durability without discounting the importance of comfort.
Quick Turn-Around Time
With the multiple pieces, making traditional dentures can take up to a month. Instead, you can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that the process of creating custom digital dentures takes only one or two weeks.
Fewer Appointments
Traditional dentures can be a considerable undertaking that includes multiple appointments for extractions, impressions, fittings, and adjustments. Digital dentures usually only require two visits! One visit to take the digital impression and create the 3D model and a second appointment to pick up your dentures.
2 Day Replacements
Have you ever lost or damaged your dentures? If your traditional mold was not saved, or it has been a while since they were made, you will have to complete the process from the beginning. Instead, since the 3D model of your dentures can be easily saved in a computer file and shared, you can have a new set of dentures in as little as two days.
Economical
This new technology does not mean spending drastically more money than traditional dentures. In fact, when considering the time saved with fewer appointments and not requiring adjustment visits, you may be surprised at the amount of money saved by choosing digital dentures.
